Practice History

Town and Country Veterinary Centre can trace its roots back to 1840 to a practice owned by a Mr Garrett based in the cottages on the High Street opposite Strutt and Parker’s current building.

Also in town was a practice owned by a Mr Macgregor living in buildings next to the entrance to Symington’s Rec on Coventry Road. Both of these practices were bought out by Kenneth Miles who had originally set up his practice in Bell Lane, Husbands Bosworth.

Town and Country Vets as it was

Mr Miles then set up his unified practice in buildings on Leicester Road opposite the police station, now Windsor Court. Edward, Prince of Wales, kept his horses here too. He continued as sole partner with one assistant throughout the war until his retirement in 1956 when he sold the practice to Roger Fox and Fred Byrne for £5000.

Fox and Byrne rented a lock up premises on Mill Hill, now The Old Mill, until Mr Fox married in 1958 and bought the current premises ‘The Shrubbery’ which, at that time, was divided into flats and owned by Mr Jenner, who also owned The Grove Hotel. The introduction of tuberculosis testing along with the development of milking parlours steadily increased the amount of work and the practice gradually increased in size, taking on more vets. Roger Fox retired in 1991.
